Hollins University is a four-year institution of higher education, a private university located in Roanoke, which is an independent city in the Mid-Atlantic U.S. state of Virginia, with a population that exceeds 94 900 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census, making it the tenth-largest city in the Commonwealth.
The university was established in 1842, first starting as Valley Union Seminary, and it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education for women in the US.
It offers its students `Challenging liberal arts and sciences programs`, also offering special academic programs which include `education (teacher licensure), Certificate in Leadership Studies, pre-medicine, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy, pre-law, and pre-veterinary, and a three-year accelerated program`, as well as Coed graduate programs: (M.F.A.) children's literature, creative writing, dance, playwriting, screenwriting and film studies; (M.A.) children's literature, liberal studies, screenwriting and film studies, teaching.`
Hollins' athletic teams compete in `NCAA Division III athletic programs with intercollegiate competition in basketball, golf, lacrosse, riding, soccer, swimming, tennis and volleyball; and fencing, cross country, martial arts, ultimate frisbee, and spirit squad club teams.`
Among the noteworthy alumni, produced by Hollins University, there are also: Mary Wells Ashworth - Pulitzer Prize winning historian, Ellen Stokes - Emmy nominated and CableACE Award winning producer and director, Natasha Trethewey - American poet and winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2007, plus others.
